Thanks to Michael Gerson for reminding us in his April 24 op-ed, “The president’s bullying spreads to ICE,” that, as citizens, we have a responsibility to oversee our immigration enforcement to make sure that the system and detention centers operate in accordance with our American values. We exercise this responsibility through our elected officials in Congress.
I know that I want my representative, Jamie B. Raskin (D-Md.), to do this, and I request that House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.), who controls the agenda, put this important matter at the forefront of the House’s business. We do not want future generations to look back at this time in history as an American Inquisition of forgotten detainees chained in their cells with no efficient due process to redress their claims of abusive strip searches, racial slurs, sexual abuse and solitary confinement. This is the United States of America. We all want it to live up to its greatness, but we must work for it.
