House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi slammed President Donald Trump on Saturday for claiming that she "doesn't truly care" about so-called Dreamers.
"I continue to tell people that the President cares about Dreamers because he has said repeatedly that he does," Pelosi (D-Calif.) wrote on Twitter. "He can prove it by supporting bipartisan proposals in the House and Senate."
Pelosi added that if Trump fails to keep his word, "it will be impossible to trust him on anything else."
The president, as he has before, claimed that Democrats do not care about children covered by an Obama-era immigration order that provides quasi-legal status and work permits to foreigners who entered the U.S. illegally as children. Trump canceled the program last year and it is technically set to expire on March 5, but a federal court ruling and later actions by the Trump administration have allowed people currently under the program to renew their status if it expires in March or later. New applications are not being accepted.
"Dems are no longer talking DACA! 'Out of sight, out of mind,' they say. DACA beneficiaries should not be happy," Trump wrote on Twitter earlier on Saturday. "Nancy Pelosi truly doesn’t care about them. Republicans stand ready to make a deal!"
The Senate failed to pass a deal on Dreamers earlier this month. Democrats have been trying to pass the DREAM Act for decades, which led then-President Barack Obama to issue his executive order on DACA.
