Lawmaker concerned about feds’ access to immigrant licenses

WILMINGTON, Del. — A state lawmaker in Delaware says he’s concerned about the federal government’s access to undocumented residents’ personal information through their drivers’ licenses.

The News Journal in Wilmington reported Tuesday that state Sen. Bryan Townsend is worried the Trump administration could improperly use that information as it cracks down on illegal immigration.

Townsend, a Democrat, authored 2015 legislation that allows undocumented residents to obtain “drive privilege” cards. The cards ensure the drivers’ have insurance and passed road safety tests.

Some states have shared information, which federal officials used to arrest and deport people. But the secretary of the Delaware Department of Transportation said that hasn’t been in issue.

Secretary Jennifer Cohan said the division would share information on “on a case by case basis” but “would not entertain a fishing expedition.”
